Chuck Schumer called requiring proof of citizenship to vote "Jim Crow 2" – and then blocked it five times.
Now Trump is demanding the Senate cancel August recess and DeSantis just told the country exactly how this ends.
Ron DeSantis signed the SAVE Act in Florida and watched it work – and he just said the Senate version has "basically zero" chance of passing before lawmakers go home.
Democrats Have Blocked This Five Times
The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act is simple.
Show proof of citizenship to register to vote.
Show a photo ID at the polls.
That's it.
Five attempts to put a basic protection in place – the kind of protection that every serious democracy on earth already requires – and five times Schumer's caucus stood in the way.
Trump called it his number one legislative priority and pushed Senate Majority Leader John Thune to force it through.
Thune tried every approach available.
He could not get past the filibuster, which requires 60 votes – and Republicans hold only 53 seats.
Four Republicans made it worse: Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Mitch McConnell, and Thom Tillis repeatedly crossed over to help Democrats sink the bill or block rule changes that might have forced it through.
Trump Is Furious and Thune Is Joking Around
Trump posted on Truth Social this week demanding Thune cancel the August recess entirely.
Trump wrote that the Senate should stay in session until it passes the bill or "far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER, where Republicans can then quickly pass everything they ever dreamed of."
A group of Republican senators backed him up, publicly vowing to object to adjournment until the bill advances – Mike Lee, Rick Scott, Bill Hagerty, Tommy Tuberville, and Ashley Moody all went on record.
Thune's response told you everything.
He did not say he is fighting for it.

He looked at reporters and said: "Show me how this ends. What's the picture of victory at the end?"
Then he joked to the Capitol press corps – "Do you guys want to be here in August?" – as if his colleagues' vacation plans matter more than every American's right to know the person at the next ballot box is actually a citizen.
The recess starts August 7 and runs through mid-September.
Why Schumer Is Winning
Here is what the media will not tell you.
Senator Tillis has an argument. He says blowing up the filibuster hands Schumer the Senate floor – Trump's judges frozen, nominees stalled, the agenda held hostage to whatever Democrats want to force to a vote.
He's not wrong about the mechanics.
But here is what that argument actually means in plain English: Republicans are choosing to protect an institution over the voters who sent them there to protect American elections.
They get to keep their procedural rules. Trump's voters get nothing.
DeSantis already showed the only path that actually works.
He signed Florida's SAVE Act into law and moved on.
Republicans in states across the country have done the same – passing their own proof-of-citizenship laws without waiting for Washington to find its spine.

The federal version may be trapped.
But every state version is a victory Schumer cannot touch.
He said the SAVE Act "will not pass – not now, not ever."
“I think the chance the Senate actually passes a real SAVE Act before the August break is basically zero,” he wrote. “Happy to be wrong about this but I don’t think I am.”
He might be right about the Senate.
He is wrong about the country.
