Rising Disney star fired for her political beliefs
Gina Carano made the transition into acting after she became the most prolific fighter in women’s mixed martial arts.
She appeared to have her big career break in Hollywood when she was cast on the popular DisneyPlus Star Wars spinoff show The Mandalorian.
After starring on the show for three seasons, she was set to be the lead character in the Rangers of the New Republic series on DisneyPlus.
But Carano was fired from Disney for being outspoken about her beliefs on transgenderism, the pandemic, Black Lives Matter, and other hot button issues on social media in 2021.
She created a firestorm on social media when she put the words “beep/boop” in her profile, which left-wing activists saw as mocking the use of pronouns.
Disney claimed that her conduct on social media was “abhorrent and unacceptable.”
The career of one of the rising stars at Disney was derailed because she would not follow the entertainment conglomerate’s woke corporate philosophy.
Elon Musk, the owner of X, promised to fund the lawsuits of users who were discriminated against by using his social media platform.
Carano took him up on the offer and filed a lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm, the production company behind the Star Wars franchise, for wrongful termination and discrimination.
Her lawsuit alleged Disney fired her after she “dared voice her own opinions” against an “online bully mob who demanded her compliance with their extreme progressive ideology.”
Carano is seeking to get her role back in the Star Wars universe and damages.
“Some of us have been unjustly singled out, harassed, persecuted, and had our livelihoods stripped away because we dared to encourage conversation, asked questions, and refused to go along with the mob,” Carano said in a statement.
Disney claims it had a First Amendment right to fire Carano
Disney filed a motion to have Carano’s lawsuit dismissed in federal court in California.
“As Carano’s own fame rose with her character’s, Carano began engaging with show fans and the public in a manner that, in Disney’s view, came to distract from and undermine Disney’s own expressive efforts,” the motion stated.
The motion claimed that rehiring her would be a violation of the company’s constitutional rights.
The company argued it “has a constitutional right not to associate its artistic expression with Carano’s speech, such that the First Amendment provides a complete defense to Carano’s claims.”
Disney is not backing down from its fight with the actress.
