Ron DeSantis could remain in the Governor’s Mansion long after his term ends in 2026

Apr 25, 2024

Ron DeSantis was re-elected to a second four-year term in 2022.

Under Florida law, a Governor who has been elected to two consecutive terms must be out of office for at least one election cycle before they are eligible to run again for Governor.

But Ron DeSantis could remain in the Governor’s Mansion long after his term ends in 2026.

Ron DeSantis edged out a narrow 0.4% victory in 2018 over Democrat Andrew Gillum to become the 46th Governor of Florida.

Over the next four years, DeSantis became a household name nationwide for his refusal to go along with Joe Biden and Anthony Fauci’s pandemic tyranny and for his battle against the Left’s woke ideology.

Despite his narrow victory in 2018, DeSantis won a 19-point landslide re-election win in 2022 over Democrat Charlie Crist.

He also helped turn Florida from a swing state to a solid red state and led Republicans to a supermajority in the State Legislature.

But Florida law only allows two consecutive terms as Governor.

DeSantis can run for Governor again in the future, but he must first sit out an election cycle before he is eligible.

However, DeSantis could still be living in the Governor’s Mansion in 2027.

That is because voters could select his wife, Casey DeSantis, as the state’s 47th Governor.

Although she is not currently running, a new poll by Florida Atlantic University and Mainstreet Research found her as the leading choice among GOP voters in the Sunshine State.

The poll showed Casey DeSantis in first place with 38 percent support, followed by Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) at 16 percent.

Asked who they would support in a Gaetz vs. DeSantis matchup, 26 percent of Republicans said they “don’t know”, while another 20 percent said they would support “another candidate.”

“There is clear interest among Republican voters in seeing Casey DeSantis run for governor in 2026,” co-director of FAU’s Political Communication and Public Opinion Research Lab and a professor of political science Kevin Wagner said. “This poll also suggests that the race is still open for new candidates to emerge over the next couple of years.”

Of course, the poll only included GOP voters.

But thanks to her husband’s leadership, Florida is now a solid red state.

Not only that, but Ron DeSantis has an approval rating of 54 percent, which is remarkably high for a Governor, especially halfway through a second term.

“The DeSantis name is well-known,” Wagner said.

Ron DeSantis’ term ends in January of 2027.

But if Casey DeSantis decides to throw her hat into the ring and run for Governor, then the DeSantis family could be in the Governor’s Mansion until at least 2030.

And that is a thought that will keep Democrats and the woke Left up late at night.
