Half of every immigration arrest made by state and local law enforcement in America is happening in one state.
Ron DeSantis said it out loud Sunday – and dared Congress to catch up.
Florida is doing the job the federal government won't make every state do – and DeSantis just explained exactly why that has to change.
Florida Is Running Laps While Other States Hide
DeSantis appeared on Life, Liberty & Levin and dropped a number that should embarrass every Republican governor in the country.
"As of today, half of all the immigration arrests done by state and local law enforcement across the country are in one state, the free state of Florida," he said. "We're lapping the field in this."
That's not a boast.
That's an indictment of every other state sitting on the sidelines.
The numbers back him up.

Since Trump took office in January 2025, Florida law enforcement arrested nearly 39,000 immigrants – compared to just 11,088 during the same 416-day stretch under Biden.
Every single sheriff's office in the state has signed a 287(g) agreement with DHS, giving local officers full immigration enforcement authority.
347 state and local agencies are now part of the operation – including the Highway Patrol, the National Guard, and the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Operation Tidal Wave – the largest joint immigration enforcement operation in ICE history – hit 10,400 arrests between April 2025 and January 2026 alone.
Florida isn't just participating.
Florida is the program.
Democrats Want a One-Way Ratchet and DeSantis Caught Them
DeSantis named the game the left is running – and did it in plain language.
"I think that the left realizes that they can't win in America unless they import people from around the world who will agree with their agenda," he said. "Part of that is having an open border, having illegal immigration and then granting them amnesty and allowing them to vote."
He's not wrong.
The playbook is obvious if you're willing to say it.
That's exactly why Florida passed the SAVE Act in April 2026 – mandatory proof of citizenship to register to vote, verification against REAL ID records, and automatic removal of noncitizens from the voter rolls.
The Left immediately sued.

They always sue.
But DeSantis already anticipated the judiciary play.
"Almost anything they do, you'll have some liberal judge that will try to stop it," he said. "What the left wants is a one-way ratchet – they want to be able to open the border, import a new electorate, and then even if there's a reaction and you have a new president come in, they don't want that president to have the power to undo the damage."
Open the floodgates. Lock them open with activist judges. Call it precedent.
Democrats have been running this play for 30 years and nobody in Washington wanted to say it clearly until DeSantis did.
The Money Argument Congress Keeps Ignoring
DeSantis also delivered the simplest possible solution to sanctuary cities.
"I just hope that Congress, for once, will use the power of the purse and defund sanctuary states, and defund sanctuary cities," he said. "Money talks, and if you do that, you'll change the behavior."
He's right.
The Shut Down Sanctuary Policies Act cleared the House Judiciary Committee in June 2026. Senator Lindsey Graham introduced companion legislation to attach criminal penalties to sanctuary obstruction via DHS appropriations.
The bills exist.

Republicans have the majority.
The only thing missing is the will to pull the trigger.
DeSantis already solved it in Florida – mandatory cooperation with DHS deportations, with the governor's authority to remove any mayor or sheriff who refuses.
No exemptions. No carve-outs.
No shelter for criminal aliens at taxpayer expense.
Congress has watched Florida arrest 39,000 people while sanctuary cities across America let the same population walk.
At some point, watching stops being an option.
