Election integrity is a hot-button issue.
In response, Ron DeSantis promised to Floridians that he would make the Sunshine State a leader in election integrity.
And Ron DeSantis just made one announcement that proves how serious he is about locking people up for voter fraud.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis became a rock star in the Republican Party during the pandemic for his willingness to stand up to Joe Biden and Anthony Fauci’s COVID nonsense.
DeSantis is widely known for his pro-freedom pandemic policies and his battle against the Left’s woke ideology.
But his efforts to protect the integrity of Florida’s elections is one issue where Ron DeSantis doesn’t get near the attention and credit he deserves.
In May of 2021, DeSantis signed legislation that banned ballot harvesting, stopped mass mailing of ballots in Florida, and enhanced voter ID protections.
Ballot harvesting, where individuals go out and round up masses of mail-in ballots and drop them off at ballot drop boxes, often during the late hours of the night, is a preferred tactic of the Left.
The new law also created an “Office of Election Crimes and Security” to investigate allegations of voter fraud and requires officials to check voter rolls annually for ineligible voters.
And the new office is already proving to be effective in catching those who commit voter fraud and making sure they are punished properly under the law.
During a press conference on Thursday at the Broward County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale, DeSantis announced that 20 people who had been disqualified from voting because of felony convictions are now facing voter fraud charges.
According to the Governor, the individuals charged with voter fraud were from South Florida and had previously been convicted of murder and sexual assault charges that prohibits them from voting.
“They did not go through any process, they did not get their rights restored, and yet they went ahead and voted anyways,” DeSantis said. “This is against the law, and now they’re going to pay the price for it,” he added.
DeSantis also said this was just the “first step” in restoring election integrity in Florida.
“This is just the first step,” DeSantis said. “There are many more in the pipeline,” he continued. “We are not just going to turn a blind eye to this – the days of that happening in Florida are over.”
Democrat Nikki Fried attacked DeSantis over the announcement, claiming it was meant “to intimidate voters and suppress turnout in the most Democratic counties in Florida.”
“Everybody wants elections to be secure, but Ron DeSantis — who has never refuted Donald Trump’s Big Lie — is the last person we can trust with ‘election police,’” she said.
However, Peter Antonacci, who heads up the new election police, said he was “certain” there were more instances of fraud in a recent election in Broward County, and he promised to hold those responsible accountable for their crimes.
“You’ll see more of these actions, and you’ll see more of these actions until the people who are behind it quit promoting it and the people that want to take risks know that there is a downside risk to voting when you’re not eligible to vote,” he said.
Ron DeSantis promised Floridians to restore election integrity.
As a man of his word, DeSantis is making good on his promise.
