Ron DeSantis gave Donald Trump this surprising message about picking a running mate

The Vice Presidential sweepstakes are heating up as the GOP Primary moves closer to the finish line.

The pick by Donald Trump could be the 2028 front-runner.

And Ron DeSantis gave Donald Trump this surprising message about picking a running mate.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis held a more than half-hour call with roughly 200 people who were recruited to be delegates for him at the Republican National Convention this summer to thank them for their support of his Presidential campaign.

One of the hottest topics in the Republican Party right now is who could become former President Donald Trump’s running mate.

Numerous names have been thrown around but at this point, there is no clear front-runner for the nod.

DeSantis rejected the idea of becoming Trump’s running mate after the former President confirmed in a Fox News town hall that the Florida governor was on his shortlist according to audio that was obtained by the New York Post and NBC News.

“People were mentioning me [as a potential Vice President]. I am not doing that,” DeSantis told his supporters.

DeSantis weighed in on what criteria Trump should use to pick his running mate.

He urged the former President not to use “identity politics” when picking his Vice Presidential candidate.

“Now we have a diverse Republican Party. I want everybody in the fold, don’t get me wrong. But I don’t want people representing 10, 15% of the party being in the driver’s seat,” DeSantis said.

Rumors have swirled that Trump could pick a woman to serve as running mate to help with suburban and female voters this fall.

Trump admitted that he liked the concept of choosing a woman to run with, but he said he would pick the best person for the job in an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press last year.

“So I would want somebody that, if something happened, the people that voted us in would have been pleased to know that they’re going to continue the mission,” DeSantis added. “I’m not sure that those are going to necessarily be the criteria that Donald Trump uses. … I have heard that they’re looking more in identity politics. I think that’s a mistake. I think you should just focus on who the best person for the job would be, and then do that accordingly.”

DeSantis left the door open for another Presidential campaign in 2028 when asked about it on the call.

“Oh, I haven’t ruled anything out,” DeSantis said. “I mean … we’re still in this election cycle. So it’s presumptuous to say, you know, this or that. I think a lot happens in politics.”

Ron DeSantis is one name that can be scratched from Donald Trump’s shortlist for Vice President.
