Disney is locked in a feud with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
The beef took an unexpected turn.
And Disney just made a huge announcement that made Ron DeSantis’ life miserable.
Disney CEO Bob Chapek found himself in the hot seat.
Chapek caved to a revolt by woke employees and pushed Disney into a fight with Governor DeSantis and Florida Republicans by opposing the Parental Rights in Education Bill.
The legislation sought to block teachers from grooming children into transgenderism through sexually inappropriate lesson plans.
When Disney put out a statement saying the company would like to see the bill either defeated or struck down by the courts, DeSantis fought back against a woke corporation meddling in politics.
In response, DeSantis signed legislation that stripped Disney of its special tax and government privileges.
Chapek picked this fight with Governor DeSantis at a time when his contract was coming due and Disney’s Board of Directors faced a major decision.
Despite the feud with DeSantis potentially hurting Disney in the pocketbook, the board stood by its woke CEO and extended Chapek’s contract for three years.
Business Insider reports:
Disney announced on Tuesday that its board of directors unanimously voted to extend CEO Bob Chapek’s contract for another three years, before it was set to expire in February.
Chapek took over as CEO in early 2020 after Bob Iger stepped down — not long before it was forced to close down its theme parks and delay its movies amid the coronavirus pandemic. The board cited Chapek’s leadership during the pandemic as a reason for its decision.
The move was expected. Chairperson Susan Arnold had recently defended Chapek in a statement after he unexpectedly fired the company’s top TV exec, Peter Rice, a beloved figure in the entertainment industry. Arnold said that Chapek and his leadership team “had the support and confidence of the board.”
Despite this seeming like a setback, it’s really a testament to Disney’s fear of DeSantis.
The “House of Mouse” extended Chapek in part so as not to look like it was folding in the face of DeSantis’ pushback to Disney’s woke politics.
No matter that Disney extended Bob Chapek’s contract.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis designed the template for Republicans at the federal and state level to fight back against woke corporations.
